Chapter 9
I barely said a word on the way back to the palace of the God of the Underworld, but that was normal behavior for me, so neither Chloe nor Elijah questioned me when the carriage stopped outside the palace steps, and I slipped away into the shadows.
Taking one of my secret routes back to my room, I wondered if Rose knew the details of Lilithâs revenge plan or if the demon was only peppering her with vague promises as part of a twisted torture game. I couldnât wait for the day that Rose was free from the pits. I couldnât think of a single person who deserved to be down there less.
The hall was empty as I let myself into my room. This evening, I was grateful to see that there was nobody waiting for me in the front parlor. Blissfully alone for the first time all day, I kicked off my shoes and collapsed in a chair by the fire, which had been stoked by an unknown servant before my arrival. However, I wasnât able to relax for more than a few minutes when there was a knock on my door.
I thought about ignoring it, but if it was a servant, they would let themselves in if they were met with silence. And if it was a god, they could easily determine if my rooms were empty or not. Having a dependable list of hiding places could only get you so far in the God of the Underworldâs palace.
With a groan, I stood up and shuffled back to the door.
The last person I expected to see standing on the other side was Declan. Framed by the dim corridor behind him and lit by the flickering fire in the hearth nearby, he looked as godly as ever. I still wasnât used to how tall he was, standing high above a height that would be rare for a mere mortal to achieve. Declanâs shoulder-length hair was tied back in a low ponytail, highlighting his strong jaw.
âHi,â he said, somewhat timidly. His demeanor reminded me of how he acted the other night when we walked back from the so-called family dinner. The savage within him was subdued.
âHello,â I replied, awkwardly hovering in the small space I allowed in the doorway between us.
âWhere did you go today?â he asked me.
âI was with my sister,â I answered. It wasnât a lie.
Declan furrowed his brow. âI know. Princess Chloe. Youâve been spending a lot of time with her and Elijah.â
âYes, I have,â I responded, confused about what the point of this altercation was.
He cleared his throat. âWell, now that youâre back, do you have time to talk?â
So he was serious when he suggested we share a conversation or two about our upcoming nuptials. For the past several days, I figured that it was just a gesture of good faith. He could go back to his father and shrug his shoulders, claiming that I wasnât receptive to him, and he tried his best. He could put all the blame on me, claiming that I was stubborn and uninterested.
